since this is a low budget trip, we are looking for things to do that are either free or really cheap but at the same time cool and unique to San Francisco. we are also trying to find some cheaper, yet good restaurants.

Explore Golden Gate Park, from the Conservatory of flowers to the Windmills can take an entire day. Visit the Deyoung Museum for art, have tea in the Japanese tea garden, see plants from all over the world in the Arboretum, rent a paddle boat and paddle around Stowe Lake, say hello to the Bison and then end the day with a drink and dinner at the Beach Chalet and enjoy the sunset over the Pacific.
City Guides offers free walking tours of the city.

I am going on a trip to Chicago, and want to buy a travel book. It seems to me that the most popular are Frommer's travel Chicago 2009 and Chicago For Dummies. Which provides the most and best information?

It depends on the type of vacation you are looking for. Frommers travel has better reviews on attractions than dummies but it is more high end. If you are looking to travel on the cheap Frommers is not much help. I generally take a Frommers to find info on things to do, and use a "Dummies" or Lonely planet for hotels and restaurants. Frommers travel also has a great website
