Best way on a budget travel USA?
Brian Asked:
My boyfriend and I (both 20, from Scotland) want to do some travelling across the US summer 09. We'll only have about five weeks to budget travel usa, but we only wanna hit key states, our preferences being NY, CA, DC, FL, maybe OH, Boston if we have time.
What's the fastest, cheapest way to get around? We've heard of Greyhounds but I've also heard they're really dodgy and my boyfriend's 6'5 so I dunno if he could handle it. =/
Thanks!

For California, you can check out the Green Tortoise bus. They have fun/funky backbackers bus trips all up and down the West Coast.
Think about Southwest airlines between the coasts. They're typically the cheapest (note though, the nearest airport to New York City served by southwest is Long Island Islip. It's rather a long trip to get there so you might want to make DC your hub.
As far as Florida. You should check out online student forums for the major colleges in the DC area (George Mason U, Georgetown U, Univ. of Maryland, etc...). You have a good chance of finding someone offering room in their car to Florida - particularly if you plan it near the beginning or end of Summer as that's when all the students are moving around the country.
For return travel, the nation's passenger rail line which has frequent service up and down the East Coast.
One other idea, Amtrak does have a pass that allows unlimited travel on their network over a set period of time. You can check out the fees and limitations at It may indeed be the best option for you.
