Well my first time traveling Europe I went with a boyfriend. But since then I have traveled all over the world by myself (Europe, Asia, Middle East) and I am blond. The only place I had a major problem was Turkey. Italy maybe a little tough too. If I were you I would go for the first option so that you get confidence traveling and understand how it works. Although I think Eastern Europe is very safe but friggen cold in winter. I actually live in Europe now and I think it is safer then Canada, definety most places are safer the London. You always have to be aware of you surroundings anyway and make eye contact with suspicious people. In high tourist areas you have to watch for pick pockets and muggers. Don't walk alone in the dark just like in London. Be wary of people (usually gipsies) trying to sell you something. They often work in pairs so that you are distracted while they take your wallet. I am not kidding I have watched them do it then yelled at them which is fun because it scares the crap out of them.
Actually I think you should go for a 4th option and take some type of tour for spring break and then travel alone in summer, you will meet so many people that you will never feel alone. If you have the cash I would recommend going skiing in Germany or Austia for Winter break. The Christmas markets are so neat and the skiing is great and reasonably priced.
Lonely Planet is good and generally pretty up to date.
I couldn't even guess how much money you would need, my advice to you is, once you work out an amount, double it. Then you should be right.
I'd say allow $50 a night for accommodation and food minimum, extra for bus and train fares, entry fees, etc.
Airfares fluctuate wildly, the 3 main carriers are Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Blue, check their sites because you may get good deals online, or else sites like http://www.flightcentre.com.au list all fares for all airlines.
Touristy places should be avoided at all costs, but my must-sees are Sydney, Cairns, Melbourne, Alice Springs and everywhere in between.
You are best off researching all this and like I said at the start, the Lonely Planet website is good, as is http://www.australia.com
Hi!
I saw your question, and sorry i don't actually have an answer coz i've never been to Russia, lol but im an 18 year old girl from Australia and sometime soon i want to do something similar to what you're doing!! I've always wanted to go to Russia and someday will probably go on a trip alone there. It would be cool to chat with you for a bit before you go and then also when you get home again so i can hear about all your experiences so i know what to expect..! lol. So if you want to talk sometime, you can write to my email: and tell me if you have msn or something..! It would be really cool to chat with you!

its costly but least costly way is to make your own way to Chiurchill. You can fly into Winnipeg and take the Hudson train from there to Churchill. You may find something much cheaper there in town if they want to fill the tundra buggy last minute or perhaps rent a car and with some local advise go foraging on your own.
you can dig down to get fares.

What a great opportunity to be able to travel Europe. Once your there, people welcome temporary borders from America and often are helpful in referring you to a friend or acquaintance in other cities. My friend was able to do the same on a tight budget and found that the Europeans were very attentive and most people charged less than reasonable rates for accommodations. A travel agent with knowledge in the area of working in Europe could most likely give you information regards to a work permit and visa. Good luck to you and have fun!!
